To help you create the best transmedia projects ever, we put together an amazing toolbox. The Sifteo interactive cubes are part of it, meaning they will be available for you to play with during the weekend. Inspiring?
Learn more about the cubes from Jeevan Kalanithi himself, CEO and co-founder of Sifteo.
SWtransmedia: In a few words, what is Sifteo?
Jeevan Kalanithi: Sifteo creates magical interactions—we build products that merge physical and interactive play. Sifteo Cubes are the award-winning interactive game system of little wireless video tiles. The cubes sense each other and your gestures, display full-color graphics, and respond to touch.
SWtransmedia: What inspired Sifteo?
Jeevan Kalanithi: As kids, we grew up loving lego and nintendo, and we can now build a company inspired by both. We are at a moment in history in which our real-world physical interactions can be enchanted by interactivity. We can make the real-world objects around us a little smarter, give them a little personality. This opens up opportunities to reinvent interactive play by bringing it into the world of classic physical playthings.
SWtransmedia: How is Sifteo different from other gaming platforms?
Jeevan Kalanithi: Sifteo Cubes are truly tactile. They are meant to be played with the way people play with blocks, dominos and cards. They afford games that engage players with each other and the world around them. All other systems focus on people staring into a single two-dimensional screen.
SWtransmedia: How are your cubes typically used?
Jeevan Kalanithi: We don’t know what “typical” is yet! Some games are played on the table, like a board game or like dominos. Others are played with the whole body. Time will tell which games players love most. We see new ideas every time a new developer gets his hands on the platform.
SWtransmedia: Why is Sifteo a good transmedia platform?
Jeevan Kalanithi: It’s perfect! Sifteo combines sensing and output in a way that no other system does. It also provides a robust development platform to try out all kind of ideas. Sifteo Cubes are perfect for games that engage with the people and world around them.
SWtransmedia: Do you think the Bay Area has strong potential for the further development of this scene?
Jeevan Kalanithi: Yes. This is the place for people to push the boundaries of culture and technology. The talent and drive of the communities here is always a source of amazement and inspiration.
SWtransmedia: Why should Startup Weekend participants use Sifteo in their project?
Jeevan Kalanithi: The future of technology entrepreneurship lies in hardware. Learn how to use new systems and build businesses on real products.
